This healthy chicken burger recipe is grilled to perfection in just 10 minutes. The ground chicken is full of flavor, seasoned with Mexican-inspired spices like chili powder, smoked paprika, cilantro, lime, and jalapeño. These chicken patties are gluten-free, dairy-free, whole 30, paleo, keto, and grain free. I would say they check almost all of the dietary boxes!
Although barbecue season is almost year-round living in Florida, with the 4th of July around the corner barbecues are ramping up all over the place. If you are looking to impress your guests or if you just want to switch up your weekly meal prep, I highly recommend adding these delicious and juicy burgers.
You can serve these burgers over vegetables to keep them low carb, or pile them high onto a bun of your choice! I’ve topped these burgers with some fresh pico and a dairy-free jalapeño avocado lime aioli.
With this much flavor and so little prep time, these healthy ground chicken burgers are perfect for any barbecue, meal prep, and even a weeknight meal. You can even serve these burgers with a fresh simmer-inspired salad!
Ingredients
Springer Mountain Farms ground chicken
Jalapeño - Jalapeños add a nice touch of spice. If you are sensitive to heat, make sure not to add too much. Always remove seeds prior to adding the jalapeño unless you like things SPICY!
Red onion - Red onion, helps to add a depth of flavor. Red onions are going to be sweeter than your typical white onion, which adds a slight sweetness to the burger.
Paprika - Adds beautiful color and an earthy, smoky flavor to the burger.
Cumin, Garlic powder, and Chili powder - A nice touch of flavor
Salt - Food’s best friend! This enhances all of the flavors of the ingredients.
Dry cilantro - This is just an essential ingredient to the burger.
Egg - Crack one egg, whisk, then spit in half, simply double the recipe to use the whole egg.
Almond flour - Almond flour is gluten-free and adds a nutty flavor and a slightly different texture to the burgers.
Lime - Fresh lime juice has a small amount of tang and sweetness to the burger. This helps to bring all of the other flavors together.
Olive oil - Don’t skip this ingredient. It really adds an extra authentic flavor to the recipe.
Toppings optional:
Jalapeño avocado lime aioli
Bacon
Cheese
Lettuce
Jalapeños
Instructions
- Preheat grill to 375/400 °F.
- To make the burger patties:
- In a small bowl, combine all of the dry seasonings.
- Then, in a large bowl, combine ground chicken, almond flour, egg, lime juice, dry seasonings mixture, onion, and jalapeño. Using your hands mix all the ingredients together very well. I like to put on nitrile gloves before using my hands. Make sure that all ingredients are incorporated well into the ground chicken.
- Next, divide the ground chicken mixture into 4 evenly sized patties.
- Make a small dent in the middle using your thumb or a round spoon.
- Lastly, once the grill has reached temperature, place all 4 patties onto the grill.
- Using a pastry brush, lightly brush olive oil onto the top of the burger.
- Close the grill and allow to cook for 5 mins per side.
- After the first 5 minutes, flip the burger, and brush the other side with olive oil.
- Close the grill and allow to cook for 4-5 more minutes.
- Once your chicken burgers have reached an internal temperature of 165°F they are done cooking and ready to be served.
- Place chicken burgers onto a plate. The chicken burgers may release some juice, which is completely fine. Using your pastry brush, simply brush the juice over the chicken patties.
Storage
When storing these chicken burgers, place them in an airtight container in the fridge. When you are ready to eat, simply reheat in the oven at 300°F for 6-9 minutes. Or, place it in the microwave for 60 seconds.

Serving topping ideas
- Toppings: I used bacon as a topping on this burger, which is totally optional…or is it?! If your family doesn’t eat pork, try adding turkey bacon!
- Jalapeño avocado lime aioli: don’t want to spend extra time preparing this aioli? Try using store-bought guacamole instead. Or, a cilantro lime sauce.
- Burger buns: for buns, I am using a gluten-free Udis gluten-free burger bun which I toast on the stove on low heat for 2 minutes on each side. Feel free to use a bun of choice or even grilled sweet potato slices.
- Fresh pico: I use a fresh pico for this burger, but you can also buy this store-bought to save time.
Top tips
- Put a thumbprint on the burger. When you place burger patties on the grill, they tend to bulge slightly in the center, which can lead to an unevenly cooked burger. For the best results, create an indentation in the center of your uncooked patties by using your thumb or a very round spoon. As the meat cooks, the indentation will disappear, and you will have a perfectly shaped burger.
- Double the recipe: the recipe for these healthy chicken burgers makes for burgers. Do you have more guests and need more burgers? You can easily double or triple this recipe to feed a large crowd.
- Do not overcook! if you do not have one, I highly recommend a meat thermometer. Remove your chicken patties from the grill when they reach an internal temperature of 165° to ensure they are properly cooked.
FAQ
Can I add cheese?
Yes, the cheese will go great with this chicken burger.
Can I make chicken burgers ahead of time?
Yes, you can make these burgers up to 1 day ahead of time. Just separate each burger with wax paper, then store it in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 24 hours.
What if I don’t have a grill?
That’s ok, you can make these healthy chicken burgers in a skillet or air fryer.
Can I freeze the burgers?
Of course! Wrap each burger individually in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. This step helps prevent freezer burn and preserves the taste and texture of the burgers. Alternatively, you can place the burgers in individual freezer-safe bags.
What else can I serve these with?
Vegetables: keep these healthy chicken burgers even healthier by serving them with sautéed zucchini, spaghetti squash, or a simple salad.
How can I cook frozen burgers?
Heat a cast-iron pan over medium-high heat and add oil. Season each side of the patties with salt and pepper. Place the frozen, seasoned patties onto the hot cast-iron pan. Cook each side for 3-5 minutes, then flip the patties. Keep flipping the patties until a nice crust forms, which takes approximately 15 minutes. Remove the patties from the pan and serve them on your favorite bun!

What a tasty burger. I used turkey because that is what I had. The burger was so juicy which is not always the case with turkey.

I have some ground chicken, these burgers sound sooo good.
I like all the spices you used for this recipe. Only thing I have to leave out is anything spicy like the jalapeño. I get bad heart burn, but I will make these this week and make your avocado lime sauce.
Thank you for your truly beautiful recipes.
