I truly think what is a good cake or cupcake without a decadent and cream frosting? I am definitely a more frosting less cake kind of gal. From cupcakes to sandwich cookies, buttercream is the secret ingredient that makes sweet treats pop.

I wanted to try something different this season, so I created this cinnamon maple buttercream frosting. It's full of all the classic fall cinnamon and maple flavor we love, making it the perfect topping for all your pumpkin or apple creations this time of year.

    Why You'll Love This Recipe

    • Simple Ingredients: You'll only need a handful of simple ingredients to make this frosting, and they're all either in your kitchen or at the grocery store.
    • Easy: This simple, delicious frosting only takes about 5 minutes to make!
    • Rich and Creamy: Like any good buttercream frosting, this version is super rich and creamy.
    • Versatile: You can use this frosting on your favorite cupcakes, cakes, cookies, cookie sandwiches, dessert bars, or even as a dessert dip.

    Ingredients

Overhead shot of individual maple buttercream frosting ingredients
    • Butter: Softened butter adds the fat necessary to create rich buttercream frosting.
    • Powdered Sugar: Sifted powdered sugar gives the frosting its sweet flavor and body. Be sure to sift it to avoid clumps!
    • Maple and Cinnamon: Maple extract and cinnamon give the frosting a big kick of fall flavor. I use OliveNation maple extract and cinnamon because they're of the highest quality and purity. Use Code: 15GoldenGK for 15% off.

See the recipe card at the end of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact amounts.

    Flavor Variations

    • Extracts: Use different extracts to create all kinds of different buttercream flavors. Any of them will work, so the sky's the limit.
    • Plain Buttercream: Leave out the cinnamon and maple for a fantastic traditional buttercream.
    • Dairy Free: Replace the butter and milk with dairy free versions to create dairy free buttercream.

    Instructions

1: Beat the butter until smooth and creamy. Then, mix the powdered sugar into it slowly.

2: Add the remaining ingredients and mix until you get a fluffy, creamy buttercream frosting.

3: At this point, use a bit more milk to thin the frosting out if it's too thick. Be careful not to overdo it!

    Hint

It is so important to sift your powdered sugar! Sifting prevents clumping that can cause your frosting to become grainy. You don't want that!

    Storage

You can store buttercream frosting at room temperature for up to 3 days. You can also refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks in an air-tight container.

What to Serve with Maple Buttercream Frosting

With its maple and cinnamon flavors, this frosting can be used on almost any of your favorite desserts to make them pop.

Try using this frosting on vanilla cupcakes, pumpkin muffins, or chocolate and vanilla layer cake. You can also use it as a filling for cookie sandwiches like these oatmeal cream pies.

    Expert Tips

    • ALWAYS sift your powdered sugar. If the sugar clumps in the frosting, it can make it grainy.
    • Fully soften your butter for the creamiest frosting texture, and avoid any little bits of raw butter in the frosting.
    • Be sure you beat your butter until it's light and fluffy before adding any other ingredients.

    FAQ

How do you avoid grainy buttercream frosting?

To avoid grainy buttercream, be sure you fully soften your butter. You should always sift your powdered sugar, as well. Finally, be sure you mix your frosting until the ingredients are fully incorporated. These are the key ways you can ensure you always have smooth, creamy buttercream frosting.

Do you have to refrigerate buttercream frosting?

Buttercream frosting can be stored for up to 3 days at room temperature. However, for longer storage, you must refrigerate it for safety, quality, and flavor.

Why don't you have to refrigerate buttercream?

Buttercream frosting uses a massive amount of powdered sugar in relation to the butter and milk it contains. This huge amount of sugar relative to the butter and milk actually acts as a short-term preservative, making it shelf-stable for up to 3 days.

    • Sifter
    • stand mixer

    Ingredients

    • 3 ½ cups powdered sugar sifted
    • 2 sticks butter softened
    • 1 ½ teaspoon Singing Dog vanilla
    • 2 teaspoon maple extract
    • Pinch of salt
    • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
    • 4 tbsp milk

    Instructions

    • Adjust the frosting by adding a touch of milk and mixing again if it's too thick.

    Notes

    • Because of its high sugar content, you can store this frosting at room temperature for up to 3 days in an airtight container. For longer storage, refrigerate it for up to 2 weeks.
    • Don't skip sifting your powdered sugar. Sifting the powdered sugar ensures your frosting is rich, smooth, and creamy with no grainy texture.
    • Fully soften your butter and beat it until it's light and fluffy before mixing the other ingredients into it.
    • Always choose the highest quality ingredients for the best flavor. High-quality butter makes such a big difference.
