Looking for a great cocktail to use it in? Try this strawberry vanilla Valentine's margarita. It's super easy to make and only takes about 15 minutes total. Not to mention, when strawberries are in season, you can make an entire bottle for just about $3.00.

Strawberry season is far too short, and this is the perfect way to keep those sunny flavors going year-round. But what is simple syrup?

Simple syrup is granulated sugar and water brought to a boil and then simmered until the sugar dissolves and it thickens into a syrup. By combining strawberries and vanilla bean, you get this perfect simple syrup.

It's a key ingredient in many cocktails as it's an easy way to add a touch of sweetness and flavor to drinks, coffees and desserts.

    Ingredients

See the recipe card at the end of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact amounts.

    strawberry vanilla simple syrup
    • Water
    • Vanilla bean pod seeds
    • Granulated Sugar
    • Strawberries

    Substitutions

There are quite a few tweaks you can make to the recipe to change the flavor profile. Here are a few ideas:

    • Vanilla - Leave out the vanilla to have just a strawberry syrup, or substitute your favorite citrus extract, like lemon or orange.
    • Strawberries - You can substitute strawberry any type of berry, fruit puree, or herb.

    Flavor Variations

    • Simmer an herb like basil or mint with the strawberries
    • Add a few slices of fresh orange for a strawberry orange syrup.
    • Simmer with dried rose petals or lavender buds for a strawberry syrup with a floral touch.
    • Add a spice like cinnamon, for a fruity syrup with a little spice.

How to Make Strawberry Vanilla Simple Syrup

Step 1. Place all ingredients into a small saucepan including vanilla bean seeds.

Step 2. Over medium heat, bring to a boil. Boil for 10 – 12 minutes stirring occasionally. Be careful not to let it boil over. Syrup will begin to turn a dark pink/red in color.

Step 3. Place a mesh strainer over a measuring cup.

Step 4. Pour syrup into mesh strainer. This will keep the strawberries from going into the measuring cup.

    Expert Tips

I always recommend making strawberry vanilla simple syrup by hand, but if you would prefer to purchase it, here are some brands I recommend.

    Joes organic strawberry syrup

    Liquid Alchemist

    Monin strawberry syrup

    Storage

You should always store your simple syrups in a syrup dispenser or in a mason jar. When stored properly, it should stay fresh for at least a month.

    Strawberry Vanilla Simple Syrup FAQ's

    Will frozen strawberries work?

I personally think this syrup is best with fresh strawberries, but if you can't get your hands on them, frozen strawberries should work.
There may be a slight alternation in the color and texture of the finished syrup.
