Why you will love this recipe
- These Apple Pie Donuts are baked instead of fried, which makes them much healthier than their counterparts.
- Even though they are packed with apple pie flavor, they make a perfect treat year-round or at other holidays like Easter and Christmas.
- They are allergen-friendly since they are gluten-free, dairy-free, and nut-free.
Ingredients
- Gluten-free 1:1 flour. I prefer to use Bob's Red Mill 1:1 baking flour for the best results.
- Baking powder: this will help with the rise of the donuts.
- Sugar: My top brand is Domino
- Apple pie spice: my favorite is from OliveNation. Use code NK15 for 15% off.
- Cinnamon: gives a nice spice to the donuts
- Coconut oil: my favorite is Nutiva
- Vanilla: always use a quality vanilla like Singing Dog Vanilla which is gluten-free.
- Eggs: make sure the eggs are at room temperature
- Apples: any apples are fine although I like to use gala apples.
Instructions
- Remove the core and stem from the apples. In a food processor, place apples and water. Pulse until an applesauce-like texture has formed. (You may need to scrape down the sides once or twice). This should make one cup. If you don’t have 1 cup use another apple.
- Preheat oven to 350°F and lightly grease a donut pan with coconut oil and a pastry brush.
- In a large bowl, combine the eggs, fresh applesauce, sugar, vanilla extract, and coconut oil. Using a whisk, mix until fully combined.
- Next, add the cinnamon, apple pie spice, baking powder, salt, and gluten-free flour to the wet mixture. Using a rubber spatula, mix this until fully combined.
- Then, add the batter to a piping bag. Once you have added it, cut the tip off of the bag, use the bag to add the donut mixture to each doughnut well. Place the donuts in the oven and bake for 13 to 16 minutes. A toothpick will come out clean once they are done. Allow donuts to cool for 10 minutes then place on a wire rack.
- In a medium-sized bowl, combine all of the glaze ingredients, beginning with the powdered sugar. Start with 1 tablespoon of almond milk and add more if the glaze is too thick. Mix until all clumps are gone. Dip the top half of each doughnut into the glaze and place back on the wire rack. Make sure to put parchment paper under the wire rack for easy cleanup.
Top Tips
Always measure your gluten-free flour. For Bob's Red Mill 1 cup of flour is 150 grams. For this recipe, I use 225 grams of Bobs Red Mill 1:1 baking flour.
Equipment
A silicone donut pan is recommended for this recipe.
Also, you can use a doughnut machine. To use a doughnut machine, you will typically need to prepare your doughnut batter or dough and then fill the molds with the mixture. The machine will then heat the batter, cook it, and rotate the molds to ensure even cooking on both sides.

can you make these in a mini muffin pan or regular muffin pan?
NKendrick says
Hi! Yes you can! They just won’t ride quite like muffins, and then of course watch the bake time!
