If you're unfamiliar with it, Jamaican jerk is a cooking style that uses a wet or dry rub made with a blend of sweet, savory, and semi spicy flavors but not too hot. No matter the variety, it's always made with allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers before being mixed with a variety of other ingredients, depending on the recipe.

The great thing about this blend of seasonings is that it can be used with any kind of protein, from chicken recipes like this one to seafood recipes like this jerk shrimp pasta.

I recommend pairin this chicken with some rice and your favorite veggies. And for dessert, the deep, sweet, warm flavors of this gluten free pumpkin loaf are the perfect match.

Why You'll Love This Jerk Chicken Thighs Recipe

    • Simple Ingredients: It only takes four ingredients to make this recipe.
    • Easy: Just coat and air fry. That's all there is to it!
    • Tons of Flavor: The hallmark of Jamaican jerk is its deep, complex flavor, and the seasoning blend I use delivers it in spades.
    • Great for Meal Prep: This chicken pairs well with pasta, rice, and your favorite vegetables, so make a big batch and freeze it for future meals.

    Ingredients

Overhead shot of jerk chicken ingredients in individual containers.
    • Boneless Skinless Chicken Thighs: Chicken thighs have a richer flavor than breasts and retain more moisture. I prefer Springer Mountain Farms chicken thighs for their high quality, freshness, and commitment to no antibiotics or other additives ever.
    • Jerk Seasoning: Pre-made jerk seasoning makes it quick and easy to give the chicken all its bold flavor.
    • Garlic Olive Oil: Costabile garlic olive oil is the base for the wet rub and adds even more flavor. I prefer Costabile olive oil for its quality and purity. Use Code: 15GOLDENGK for 15% off.

See the recipe card at the end of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact amounts.

    Flavor Variations

    • Use different proteins: You can make this recipe with chicken breasts, pork chops, or your favorite fish or shellfish. Just be sure to adjust your cooking time accordingly.
    • Make a low-sodium version: Omit the salt for a low sodium version of this recipe.
    • A fruity flavor: Add a little fruit juice like mango or pineapple to the rub liquid for a tropical, fruity twist.

How to Make Air Fryer Jerk Chicken Thighs

1: Wash the chicken and pat it dry with paper towels.

2: Mix the remaining ingredients to make a paste and coat both sides of the chicken thighs with the marinade.

Overhead shot of boneless skinless chicken thighs coated with jerk seasoning.

3: Air fry until the internal temperature registers 165 degrees with a meat thermometer. Enjoy!

    Hint

For maximum flavor, let the thighs marinate for at least 30 minutes.

    Storage

Refrigerate this jerk chicken for up to 3 days in an air-tight container. For longer storage, freeze it for up to 3 months in an air-tight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag with as much air removed as possible. Defrost in the refrigerator overnight before reheating.

To reheat the chicken, place it in a baking dish and cook at 350 degrees until heated through.

What to Serve with Jamaican Jerk Chicken

Serve this spicy, smoky, sweet chicken over a bed of rice or pasta. You can also pair it with simple vegetable sides like air fryer zucchini and squash, light, flavorful tomato, shrimp, and cucumber salad, or even a simple asparagus recipe.

For dessert, keep the tropical theme going with coconut cream pie, or opt for the cold, refreshing sweetness of homemade peach ice cream.

Tips for the Best Jamaican Jerk Chicken Recipe

    • Wash and pat your chicken dry before adding the rub to ensure it sticks to the meat.
    • Marinate the chicken for 30 minutes to an hour for maximum flavor.
    • Your chicken is done when the internal temperature registers 165 degrees.
    • Preheat your air fryer for even cooking and correct cooking times.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    What is Jamaican jerk?

Jamaican jerk is a method of cooking using a dry or wet rub made with allspice, Scotch bonnet peppers, and a variety of other ingredients, depending on the individual recipe. It's an iconic Jamaican flavor that's sweet, spicy, and smoky.

Do you really have to preheat an air fryer?

Many people say you don't, however, preheating an air fryer can help make your food cook more evenly and keep cooking times as accurate as possible. It only takes a few minutes, so there's no reason no to.

    How hot is Jamaican jerk?

Jamaican jerk is traditionally quite hot. Scotch bonnet peppers measure from 100,000 to 300,000 on the Scoville Heat Unit scale. For comparison, jalapenos only register between 2,500 and 8,000.

Can you make mild Jamaican jerk?

You can. Those of you who don't like a ton of heat can rest easy. There are several varieties of toned down, mild Jamaican jerk spices out there.

    Equipment

    • Measuring spoons
    • Mixing Bowl
    • Air Fryer

    Ingredients

    • 6 boneless skinless thighs
    • 1 tbsp garlic olive oil
    • 3 ⅓ tablespoon jerk seasoning
    • ½ teaspoon salt more or less to taste

    Optional Pasta Recipe

    • 12 oz spaghetti
    • 1 stick butter

    Instructions

    • Wash the thighs and pat them dry with paper towels.
    • Mix the oil and seasoning to create a paste.
    • Thoroughly coat both sides of the thighs with the rub.
    • Air fry the chicken at 380 degrees for 8 minutes. Then, flip the chicken and air fry for another 5 to 7 minutes until the internal temperature reaches 165 degrees. Be careful not to overlap the chicken to prevent uneven cooking.

    Optional Pasta

    • Boil the pasta according to the package directions for al dente. Drain the pasta, then add it back into the pot.
    • Add a stick of butter or dairy free butter to the pasta and let it melt completely while stirring. Then, add the juice from cooking the chicken in the air fryer to the pot. Stir.
    • Cut the chicken into bite-sized pieces, stir into the pasta, and enjoy.

    Notes

    Tips
    • Preheat your air fryer for even cooking and correct cooking times.
    • Hold the chicken as close to the bottom of the sink as possible and use a gentle stream of water to avoid splashing as you rinse.
    • Wash the sink and counters immediately after rinsing the chicken.
    • Marinate the chicken for 30 minutes to an hour for maximum flavor.
    • Check your chicken for doneness with a meat thermometer for maximum flavor and food safety.
    • Let the chicken thighs rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving to redistribute the juices.

The balance of sweet, smoky, and just the right kick of spice was perfect, and even after halving the salt (just my taste), it still popped with flavor.

This was such a delicious and easy weeknight meal (only 25 min!). The pefect amount of spice too. The chicken was flavorful and the spaguetti side that you suggested paired perfectly. I'll definitely be making this again. Delish!! 😊
